Cycle the Greenway

This is a 42-km long off-road trail that follows the route of the old railway line from Westport to Achill Island. It is one of the longest and most scenic greenways in Europe, passing through rolling hills, pastures, and coastal villages. You can rent a bike from one of the many bike hire shops in Westport or along the route, and enjoy the scenic ride at your own pace. You can also stop at various attractions along the way, such as Newport, where you can see a 19th-century viaduct and a 15th-century castle; Mulranny, where you can enjoy a sandy beach and a saltwater marsh; and Achill, where you can explore the rugged island with its cliffs, lakes, and beaches.

Climb Croagh Patrick

This is the most famous mountain in Ireland and possibly one of the most popular things to do in Westport. It is where Saint Patrick is said to have fasted for 40 days in the year 441 AD. The hike is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the summit, where along the way you can see a small chapel and a statue of Saint Patrick. You can also visit the National Famine Monument and the Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre at the base of the mountain, where you can learn more about the history and culture of the area.

Explore Westport House

This is one of the most beautiful and historic houses in Ireland, dating back to the 16th century. It was built by the Browne family, who are direct descendants of Grace O’Malley, the famous pirate queen of Ireland. You can tour the elegant rooms, admire the fine art and antiques, and learn about the fascinating history of the family and their guests, such as Queen Victoria and Napoleon. You can also enjoy the gardens, the lake, and the adventure park on the grounds, which include a pirate ship, a mini train, a zipline, and more.

Explore the Quay

This is a lively waterfront area with some beautiful shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars. You can stroll along the quay, watch the boats come and go, and enjoy the views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. You can also visit the Westport Quay Heritage Centre, which showcases the maritime history of the town, from its fishing and trading days to its involvement in the 1798 rebellion. You can also see a model of Grace O’Malley’s ship and a replica of her castle on Clare Island.

Hit the Town

Westport is known for its vibrant nightlife, with plenty of pubs, clubs, and live music venues to choose from. You can enjoy a pint of Guinness, listen to traditional Irish music, or dance the night away in one of it’s late bars. Some of the most popular spots include Matt Molloy’s, which is owned by a member of The Chieftains and hosts regular sessions of Irish music; it’s neighbour The Porterhouse, which has live bands and more; The Clock Tavern, which has a cosy atmosphere and a large beer garden; and The Castlecourt Hotel, which has a nightclub. The Castle Late Night Venue is a large versatile space occupying 4 different rooms each with their own individual style.
